Fabric Labels - Steinthal & Co Collection.
Originally 6 x 4 inches. Held in MoMa collection. In the mid-1920s the upcoming artist and graphic designer Edward McKnight Kauffer designed a large series of shipping tickets to be attached to bales of cotton cloth for export on behalf of the Manchester concern of Steinthal. Each one is a small work of art and was designed to be wholly ephemeral. This is a tipped-in ticket to an issue of Commercial Art from 1923. McKnight Kauffer, American by birth, largely made his name in the UK largely due to early patronage and commissions from the London Underground Railways group. He became rapidly established as one of the great graphic designers and artists of his generation.
